Jump Starter Guide
What is a Jump Starter?
Jump starters are small, portable power packs that can start a car when its battery has depleted. Utilising a specialist, high-current lithium-ion battery, jump starters can often start numerous vehicles on a single charge. They often don’t require recharging for extended periods unless used, ideal for carrying in the glovebox or boot. Jump starters quickly restart your vehicle without the need for lengthy booster cables or a even second vehicle.
What is the difference between a battery charger and a jump starter?
A jump starter's sole purpose is to be used to start a vehicle in case of a dead battery. Because it delivers a vehicle a short, sharp burst of power during start-up, a jump starter can not be used to charge a battery over a longer period.
On the other hand, smart battery chargers are used to charge and maintain a battery rather than start a vehicle. They provide a slow and steady stream of power that ensures a battery is kept in peak condition during periods of cold weather or storage. Unlike a Jump Starter, a smart charger doesn’t deliver the amps required by a vehicle to start.
Simply put, smart chargers are a preventative measure to help avoid dead batteries whereas jump starters are the cure to restart a vehicle with a partially depleted battery.
Which Jump Starter should you buy?
Jump starters come in various sizes and power outputs, with varying features from model to model. However, the most important factor when selecting a Jump Starter is the size of the engine you want to start, with larger petrol and diesel engines requiring more amps to start.
Will a Jump Starter start a completely dead battery?
Jump starters work by providing an additional boost to the vehicle's battery to start the vehicle. If a battery has completely failed or falls below 3V, a jump starter may be unable to restart that vehicle and a full battery change would be required.
